For the past decade, B2B export acquisition revolved around one word: ranking. Buyers searched product terms on Google, clicked a few suppliers and compared websites. Today, AI assistants are rewriting that path. A buyer can ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity: “Which Chinese companies are reliable C&I energy storage integrators?” The answer often contains only three to five brands.

From being searched to being answered

AI does not return ten blue links. It synthesises sources into an answer and cites the pages it considers credible. Two things follow: your brand must appear in the sources AI is willing to cite, and your information must be clear enough for a model to understand who you are, what you do and who you serve.

Many companies already have blogs and product pages but are still not cited. The problem is rarely volume. It is the absence of verifiable facts, clear opinions, authorship, sources and machine-readable structure.

How AI decides who to cite

Model ranking logic is not public, but several signals recur in practice:

  • Clear entity: brand name, product names, legal entity and scope stay consistent across pages.
  • Verifiable content: data, cases, certifications and third-party coverage — not adjectives.
  • Clear structure: headings, paragraphs, FAQs, schema and internal links help models extract answers.
  • Authoritative sources: trade media, associations, clients and partners form a trust network.

GEO is not a replacement for SEO

GEO and SEO share the same content and technical foundations but aim at different outcomes. SEO competes for clicks on a results page; GEO competes to be cited in a generated answer. They do not conflict: many pages cited by AI already rank well in search.

The right move is not to stop SEO and start GEO. It is to put keywords, content, technology and authority on one roadmap so the same asset serves both.

Where a B2B company should start

First, run an AI visibility baseline: take 20–30 real procurement questions, test whether your brand is mentioned, how it is described and which sources are cited. Second, map the brand entity and content gaps, starting with the questions buyers always ask before shortlisting. Third, set up monthly monitoring and judge progress by citation sources, mention rate and inquiry quality — not a single screenshot.

GEO is not a sprint. It is the slow work of building a clear, credible, citable coordinate for your brand inside the AI knowledge network.
