The most common B2B SEO mistake is starting with a keyword list sorted by search volume. High-volume terms are often vague; the queries that produce inquiries are more specific and closer to a purchase decision.
Layer by buyer stage
Four layers work well: problem awareness (how to choose, what is), solution comparison (A vs B, best supplier), purchase intent (supplier, manufacturer, custom, quote), and brand/alternative (brand name, competitor alternative). Each layer needs different content and pages.
Map to page types
- Product pages: product + specification + supplier/manufacturer terms; focus on specs, certification, applications and inquiry.
- Industry/solution pages: industry + solution terms; focus on scenarios and cases.
- Blog: questions, comparisons, selection and how-to terms; build topical authority.
- Case pages: client type + outcome terms; provide third-party proof.
Build topic clusters, not islands
Around one core topic, create a pillar page and supporting articles with internal links. Search engines and AI systems can then understand your expertise and combine pages into answers.
Keep correcting with data
A keyword matrix is not a one-off file. Review search terms, rankings, clicks and inquiries monthly. Promote terms that produce qualified inquiries; demote terms that bring traffic without conversion.
A simple template
For each keyword record: term, intent, buyer stage, target page, current rank, monthly volume, inquiry contribution and next action. One table beats scattered documents.
